Title: Mastoidectomy & Tympanoplasty
Venue: Library cum Conference Hall, UCMS-GTB Hospital, Delhi
Dates : February 19-20-21, 2015
Introduction:
Chronic otitis media is still the most prevalent ear disease and tympano-mastoidectomy for its treatment has been in existence for more than a century. Although the current tympano-mastoid surgery procedure is adequate for eradication of disease (cholesteatoma), it is not efficient for reconstruction of hearing apparatus. Also, the mastoid cavity thus created can itself lead to surgical failure and discharging ear apart from life long care and difficulty in usage of hearing aids. Mastoid obliteration has emerged as a viable option to ward off this menace. The course aims to highlight the standardised and well proven techniques for tympanoplasty and mastoid obliteration.
Last decade has seen increasing use of cartilage in middle ear surgery. The use of cartilage for reconstruction of tympanic membrane has shown to give good acoustic results while providing stable tympanic membrane in cases of compromised eustachian tube function. It is proposed to demonstrate the procedure of cartilage slicing with cartilage knife and usage of these plates for tympanic membrane reconstruction. Also, the usage of conchal cartilage for mastoid cavity obliteration will be demonstrated.
The delegates on completion of the course should be able to decide on the best procedure for varied middle ear pathologies. It is also hoped that they will become proficient in obliterating the mastoid cavity thus providing dry and trouble free ears. They would also have gained familiarity with reconstruction of hearing apparatus using prostheses of titanium and HA.

Dr Zahnert did his medical studies at Berlin and Dresden and subsequently submitted his Ph.D thesis which was adjudged the best German Ph.D thesis in ORL (Laser-Doppler-Vibrometry measurements of the middle ear) and awarded Anton von Troltsch award of the German Society of ORL, University of Dresden, Germany. His research areas include investigation of sound transfer characteristics of middle ear and development of middle ear prostheses. His lab in Dresden is at the forefront of middle ear research and hands-on-training is imparted to delegates using LDV and tympanoplasty models during annual courses. He is on the editorial board of Otology & Neurotology journal and actively involved in scientific cooperation and promotion of ear surgery.
